Implications of Population Drop

The Necessity of New Orleans - New York Times: "After describing how and why New Orleans is and always has been central to the economy — for reasons that go way beyond the oil industry — Mr. [George Friedman, chairman of Strategic Forecasting] writes that while it's good that so much of the infrastructure is intact, the population loss could be devastating. 'The physical and business processes of a port cannot occur in a ghost town, and right now, that is what New Orleans is. It is not about the facilities, and it is not about the oil. It is about the loss of a city's population and the paralysis of the largest port in the United States.'"
